Many years ago when I was struggling to learn jazz and jazz theory, I came across Paul Weiss in Ithaca, NY. I was teaching in Binghamton, NY at the time.
I recall how in the first lesson I could tell that Paul had something to
offer. Most of the music theory material here is the outcome of the 4 or 5
lessons I took from Paul. I'll always be grateful for having found him and what
I got out of the deal. A lot; that's for sure!!
But just recently, I made contact with Paul after nearly thirty years. Now
comes the good part. Paul told me that the real source of what he was teaching
came from Mick Goodrick; otherwise known as Mr. Goodchord. Mick is a professor
of guitar at Berklee College in Boston, MA. If you don't know anything about
Berklee, you'd better get looking (Berklee.edu).
As soon as I got off the phone with Paul, I looked up Mick and WOW, this is
the guy! He's taught all the greats that have come out of Berklee. From Pat
Metheny, John Scofield, Steve Vai, to John Abercrombie, Mick has been at the
cutting edge of guitar knowledge.
I sat back and just couldn't believe it! So that's where all this stuff came
from. I was also amazed at the heritage I shared with those big names. It also
made me feel a lot stronger about the lessons I had been teaching ever since
taking from Paul. Man, that felt great!
So, here's to Mr. Goodchord! Thanks Mick. Maybe one day I'll get to meet you
and shake your hand.
