When it comes to music theory, most musicians I've met either get it, don't get it, think they get it, or don't think they get it. That's four different possibilities.
Whatever the initial case may be, I have a suggestion. For those of you who are convinced you don't get it and won't be able to, help is on the way. For those of you who think you know already, you are in for a surprise. We're not saying you don't but after altering the approach and seeing things from another angle, you'll really be glad you showed up.
The way to approach music theory:
- Don't think in terms of scales, key signatures, intervals, etc. Think in terms of a connected series of logical conclusions
- At first you might be inclined to move quickly through the material but don't. Each step requires a lot of hands-on massaging. Knowing the principle behind some technique is not enough. You need to know the full extent of a concept and you can only do that by immersing yourself fully in the material
- Be sure that each concept maintains a logic link to prior logical concepts. What that means is that when you understand the logic behind one step and you extend that step to another step, be sure you see the logical link between the two. This will make more sense as you walk through the lessons
- More later...
